Evacuees During World War 2 it was envisaged that the enemy would most probably send aeroplanes with bombs to destroy cities such as Liverpool; the docks where food was unloaded and the ships. It was decided that most schools would be closed and all the children with their teachers would be sent to the countryside where it would be safer. This was called evacuation, and the children called evacuees. They were told to pack a small case with some clothes and take it with their gas masks to a railway station in the middle of the city to be taken to safer areas. Gas masks were in brown cardboard box with strong string which acted as a strap so that the boxes could be carried over their shoulder. The three children on the left of this picture were evacuees from Liverpool and they stayed with relatives of the other two children. The two end boys remained in touch for many many years afterwards. |
