Hi, I am trying to trace any descendents of Ernest Adolphus Clayton SANDLAND. He was born in England in 1881 and died in Australia in 1938. Family rumours say he lived in Canada for some time between 1920 and 1930. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Author's Note: Thanks Jan. I have Jan's email address if anyone wants to contact her direct.

I am trying to trace "Nicola" in Canada who placed a message on a Sandland website as below which has since closed down.

Has anybody links with Herbert Sandland b. abt 1881 and Elizabeth Ann Chappell b. abt 1877 – they were married during the third quarter 1902 and lived in Church Street, Skipton. Herbert was an Elementary School Teacher who committed suicide.

Also info regarding Marjorie Sandland - born 25.6.1911

I have just found your website. On the page of Sandland Snippets, there is a piece about William Sandland, who apparently had the street in Holborn named after him.  William 1809, was the brother of John Sandland, who in turn was the father of Job Sheriff Sandland (my great grandfather.) Thank you for the information.

Also, regarding. your message dated 25.01.12. American born Sandlands:

John Sandland (1804-1874) married Sarah Bowler Cole (1804-1873) in Yardley, Warwickshire.  They seemed to have returned to Birmingham in 1834-6 where they had 5 more children!

William Sandland  born 1826 USA

Sarah Sandland born 1828 USA

John Cole Sandland born 1831 Mass USA - died 1883

Emma Sandland born 1834 USA, died 1933!

George, Frederick James, Job Sheriff (my G.Grandfather), Mary Louisa and James were all born in Birmingham.

Hope this info. is of some interest to you.

Author's Note: Thank you Julie, much appreciated. I have now updated the records of Job Sheriff Sandland (XX01) and William Sandland (XX06). Please keep sending any information.

I am the 77 year-old son of Thomas and Doris Sandland. He was born in Whitby and she in Maltby, Yorkshire. Both were of a large family and I must have aunts and uncles all over the place not to mention cousins by the score! It would be interesting to hear from any of them.

Author's Note: Thanks for the message Keith - I have emailed you separately.

Update. I have noticed that there was a Thomas Sandland born about 1910 that may be your father – he married a Doris Cox during the 4th quarter 1932. Thomas had two brothers and a sister – Kenneth b. abt 1903 – Conrad b. abt 1905 and Alice b. abt 1908. Their parents were Herbert Sandland b. abt 1881 and Elizabeth Ann Chappell b. abt 1877 – they were married during the third quarter 1902 and lived in Church Street, Skipton. Herbert was an Elementary School Teacher.

Herbert also had two brothers and a sister – Florence b. abt 1882 – Conrad b. abt 1884 and Kenneth b. abt 1885. Their parents were Thomas Sandland b. abt 1856 and Alice Tomlinson b. abt 1854. Thomas was also a Schoolmaster (from Lancashire) and lived in Belpass Street, Skipton.

Just seen your website for the first time - its amazing. I have Sandlands in my past and have found it very useful in tracing my family tree. Really looking forward to you completing all the records. I am particularly interested in Robert Dickin Sandland who was recorded to have been in a village called Wybunbury at one time. Also indications that he was a butler in London for a while. If anyone has any information, please send a message to this website. Harriet.

Author's Note: Update. Harriet - I have a Robert Dickin in my records - please click here to access his record.

Although extremely interesting, this book appears to provide only statistical Sandland information that has been extracted from census records. If you are looking for specific individuals of the Sandland name, then this book may not be for you.

Nantwich was known as a supplier of salt in Roman times for Chester and Stoke-on-Trent. In the eleventh century the town was destroyed by the Normans at the time of the conquest and at the Domesday survey it was recorded as having eight salt houses and a castle.

The market town of Nantwich retains a medieval street pattern despite being damaged by the Welsh in the thirteenth century and suffering a catastrophic fire in 1583. Elizabeth I donated £2,000 towards its £30,000 reconstruction. In the Civil War it was the only Cheshire town to be Parliamentarian and experienced several Royalist sieges. The Parliamentarian victory at the Battle of Nantwich in 1644 is still celebrated by Holy Holly Day on 26 January each year when the Sealed Knot re-enact the battle.

The production of salt led to the town becoming a centre for Cheshire cheese and the tanning of leather. By the sixteenth century a total of 216 salt houses existed in the town and the industry then gradually declined until the final one closed in 1856. Tanning survived until 1974 and clothing continues to be another of the town's industries. Nantwich had a population of 12,515 in 2001.

The above information was extracted from the Crewe Chronicle article Nantwich History published 29th Jul 2008.
