Frederick George was always
known as George and was born on 24th Aug 1904 at
21 Hawthorn Avenue, Willaston, Nantwich
(Hawthorn Avenue is now within the boundaries of
Nantwich). He was baptised on the same day and
in the same church as his future wife, Violet
May Ruscoe, Nantwich Parish Church, on 28th Sep
1904. He is shown to be living at 21 Hawthorne
Avenue in 1911 at the age of 7 years.
He left school at the age of
14 years and worked as a Farm-hand for a
Millington's Farm in Broad Lane, Stapeley.
Some
years later he was known to have worked at a Smethurst's Farm near to Knutsford, Cheshire
again as a Farm-hand. He later worked for
British Rail in Crewe and was transferred from
Crewe to Shrewsbury in 1929. His pay at that
time was one pound seven shillings per week.
George married Violet May
Ruscoe on 29th Mar 1929 at Nantwich Parish
Church. The witnesses at the ceremony were
Violet's brother Frank and her sister Alice.
George and Violet lodged with a Mr Hughes in
Shrewsbury during the early part of their
marriage.
They moved to 27 Wybunbury Road,
Willaston near Nantwich in 1933 and their first
child was born there during that year.
Unfortunately the child, a girl, was still-born
and George carried her on his bike to Wybunbury
Church where she was buried by the churchyard
wall in an unmarked grave. George and Violet
lived in Wybunbury Road for the rest of their
lives.
George worked as a Gang
Leader on the Permanent Way for British Rail,
Crewe and for many years he was responsible for
the maintenance of the railway track on the
Shrewsbury line between Crewe and Nantwich.
He helped with the Scout
Group in Willaston for a time and was also
involved in the running and organising of the
village Whist Drives. He was also known in the
village as a part-time Cobbler, Hairdresser and
First-Aider. He was a member of the Wyche
Anglers in Nantwich and was noted as one of the
best fly-fishermen in the area at that time.
George's wife Violet May died in
1953 leaving him with his two sons, aged 15 and
10, to bring up. He died on 31st Jan 1954 of
Cerebral Haemorrhage (Stroke), two months after
his wife died, at his home in Willaston and was
buried in the same grave as his wife in the
churchyard at Wistaston Church on 4th Feb 1954
(plot B85).
