Biography
Henry was born Abt. 1819 in Marylebone, London
and baptised in Marylebone on 5th Sep 1819.
He was known to have been involved in criminal
activities and was shown on the Criminal
Registers to have been on trial for Larceny on
27th Nov 1838 - on this occasion he was acquitted.
On 20th Oct 1840 he was on trial again for Larceny
and found guilty. He was sentenced to 3 months
imprisonment.
He was later on trial again at the Central
Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on 5th Apr 1841 for
Housebreaking and Larceny.
Henry and a James Spark
were indicted for breaking and entering a dwelling house
on 18th Mar 1841 at St Martin-in-the-Fields,
London and stealing two silver bottles. They were found
guilty of theft and were sentenced to transportation to
Australia for ten years. Henry was then aged 22 years.
They were put on the convict ship
"Barossa" which sailed from Sheerness for
Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land on 30th Aug 1841. There were 350 convicts
on board and the ship arrived on 13th Jan 1842 - 2 convicts died during
the journey.
The Ship's records showed Henry's physical
description as 5 ft 4 ins, with an occupation of Tailor and that he
could read and write.
On the 24th Jul 1862 the Launceston Examiner
newspaper for Hobart Town and the South reported that at
'The Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court',
Henry Sandland
was charged
with stealing a coat, the property of George Hickmott, of Brown's River,
and was acquitted.
Henry died on
the 15th Oct 1869 in the District of Brighton, Tasmania (formerly
Van Diemen's Land) he was aged 47 years (Reference: Tasmanian Pioneer
Index on CD Year 1869 No. 30).
A copy of the Inquest into his death shows
that he was "...found drowned and suffocated in the River Jordon in the
District of Brighton, Tasmania .... no marks of violence appearing on
his body....."
Henry was buried in the Churchyard of St
Mark's at Pontville on 16th October 1869.
